About the Book

The book How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents by Julia Alvarez is an interesting book telling the story of four sisters.Through past hardships the Garcia girls have lost their ethnic background. The story first begins in the present starting with the arrival of Yolanda back in the Dominican Republic moving backwards to the past to reveal the lives of Carla, Sandra, Yolanda, and Sofia and how they came to the Untied States. Each girl has a unique past which shapes them to who they later become.

Carla is the oldest daughter in the family. Sandra is the second oldest who is dependent and looks Swedish than Spanish because of her Swedish roots. Yolanda is the poet of the family and she is also the third oldest daughter in the family. Sofia is the youngest daughter who has a bad relationship with her father. The girls' mother wants them to act less like Americans and become more like their ethnicity.
